It is always a good idea to have your ideal table concept in your mind before you go shopping for one. So, before you go running off to buy the first matching set of round kitchen table and chairs you see you should know that there are actually two different types. One type, the traditional version, has a surface with four or more individual chairs to encircle it. The other type is more like a bench situation that lines up against the corner walls of your kitchen. This style is often referred to as a breakfast nook and is more commonly designed with a square or rectangle surface and rarer yet with an oval top. These nooks can be great space savers since the seating hugs the walls. This leaves more open floor space which is ideal for a highly used area. This a very important if you are short on space and need to get the most out of this area on a daily basis. The traditional kitchen table design can come as an expandable leaf or drop leaf table. Both of these styles allow you to change the shape and size of your dining surface as the need arises. This ability to adjust size when needed is a real plus for a small dining area. When you are expecting guests you just enlarge it and everyone can squeeze in and enjoy a nice meal. After your guests leave you simply adjust it so that it's once again a more proportional fit for the room.
Adjustable Tables. This is fine if the kitchen is large enough to accommodate a full size table and still leave plenty room for cooking, preparation and the 101 other tasks carried out in the kitchen. For smaller kitchens, the table would have to take up less space. These come in the form of expandable or adjustable tables. There are several types of these, including gate-leg tables where a leaf is attached to the tabletop by hinges and raised when needed. It rests on one or two legs that are also hinged to pull out as a support for the flap. Another type involves extra leafs that can be slotting into a gap formed by pulling two parts of the main tabletop apart. There are other types of expanding mechanisms which are also in use today, both for kitchen tables and formal dining tables where the space available is limited. Where a room has multiple functions, it makes sense to use a table that is full-size only when in use.
A new table is all you need, perhaps, to become the new gathering place for your family. Pick a kitchen table that has removable leaves and you can gather the whole family around one table, rather than having a main table and a "kid's table." When the family is over, add all the leaves. When they leave, put the table back to it's usual size. A lot of families get a table when they move into their first home. Unfortunately, families have a way of growing over the years and a once spacious table that comfortably sat the two of you is now crowded with wee ones. Initially, it's no problem, since the kids are in high chairs. But once they graduate to the main table, a new kitchen table is all you need to all feel comfortable during dinner time. Of course, you could just get a larger table to begin with, but no two houses seem to have the same dimensions, so the table that fit perfectly in your old kitchen or dining area may be too big or too small for the new home. In these cases, a new kitchen table is all you need to have the perfect size for the new home. Why, with a little savvy shopping, you can find a table that looks as if it were custom made for your home.
