Kitchen Tables and Dining Tables. In bygone days, it was not unusual for most meals to be eaten in the kitchen. Even if a family had a separate dining room, that was often kept for formal dining and special occasions while family meals were taken at the kitchen table. The dining table was of a higher quality, often highly French polished and of fixed dimensions. Kitchen tables came in a wide range of styles, sizes and finishes, and these are still available today. Dining tables in the Mission style, for example, are often fundamentally a tabletop resting on four plain legs. Such tables would stay in the kitchen surrounded by as many chairs as people living in the house. They would be used for all family meals.
Flea Markets and Garage Sales. Antique furniture, by its very nature, is going to be used furniture. You want it to be used and you want it to be a little bit worn down. The shabbier a piece is the less you have to pay for it and if you know how to fix it up on your own it will save you a ton. Scout out your local flea markets and check newspaper ads for any mention of garage sale. Kitchen tables are likely to show up at these places because they are not that big and won't be hard to just carry off the lot. Visit an Antique's Auction or Local Antique Dealer. Often, in the classifieds section of your local newspaper, you will see an Auction advertised. Auctions are great places to find artwork, collectables, and even furniture. Antiques are particularly popular at auction because they are hard to find items and sometimes difficult to price. If you are lucky and bid skillfully you can come away with great deals on items that might have cost you a fortune in any other store. If you are not interested in buying off the auction block you can scout out your local antique's dealers or do a little bit of traveling to find ones on the outskirts of your area. Dealers will have plenty of options for you to choose from but the prices may be inflated so buyer beware. Before you buy anything you think is an antique round kitchen table make sure to have it checked out. Never trust the seller, trust an expert.
